Words and phrases are appearing in various programs.
including MS Word, when typing an email, when putting data
in a box on the net or wizards.
I have run Norton anti-virus and an anti-virus program
suggested by Microsoft. No viruses were present.

Do you talk to yourself? Do you have a microphone
connected?

It's quite possible that you have the Advanced Text Services enabled. This
includes speech recognition. Unfortunately, it's not immediately apparent
that this is on by default (and that consequently you can't run a TV or
Radio or talk to anyone other than the computer), or how to turn it off.
It's a bit buried.

Go to Control Panel, Regional and Language Options. Then, click the
Languages tab. The top section of this page has "text services and input
languages" - click on Details. You get a new pair of pages; click on
Advanced. Now, under System Configuration, *select* the checkbox to Turn
off Advanced Text Services.

Click OK all the way back to the desktop. I'm really not sure if you need
to reboot or not. However, you should find that the machine speeds up a
bit - speech recognition uses a bit of the processor's attention.
