You aren't by any chance hitting the X in the very top
right of the screen are you. Excel is not
like Word in that you can shut down single documents that
way. There are two Xs at the top right
of the screen - one is for Excel the application, and the
one just inside that is for the Excel
file that you have open. Clicking the file one will
close the file, but clicking the application

(EXCEl.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
windows. You will need to restart the program.)

Then all the open excel windows close.

OK, couple of things spring to mind that you might want to try:-

1) Try renaming your *.xlb file to *.xlbold. This is the toolbar customisation file, and
versions prior to 2002 seems to cause all kinds of problems when it gets a bit bloated. Excel
will simply create a new one when you start it up. You will lose all your customisations
obviously, but if that doesn't fix it you can also delete the new one and rename your old one
back.

2) Shut Down Excel and then do Start / Run and type in excel.exe /regserver which will reset all
the defaults for Excel in Windows' registry
