Unwanted Reboots

Hi. Looks like I'm having the same trouble with random reboots as a lot of
people here. It also happens EVERY time I try to run a virus scan with
Symmantec, even after I reinstalled it earlier today.

When my computer comes back on, I usually get a message "Windows has
recovered from a serious error." But when I try to send the error report it
won't connect to the server.

This is the error signature: Does it means anything?

BCCode : 1000008e BCP1 : C0000005 BCP2 : BA14EFAE BCP3 : 825A0618
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 768_1

I've disabled the Automatic reboot in the control pannel. We'll see if that
helps.

Thanks, Jen

I just tried scanning again and the computer didn't reboot, but the scanner
just froze up in the middle of things and now won't launch again -- no error
message or blue screen or anything.

Has anybody had any luck figuring this out yet??

Thanks Again, Jen

In Jen <[email protected]> had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

Jen,

I suspect malware or virus in this case. Update your virus definitions and
scan for the latest malware. Below is a bunch of links to suitable freeware
security software. You might also want to download LSP-Fix in case your
winsock is damaged when you delete malware.

LSP-Fix - a free program to repair damaged Winsock 2 stacks:

All of these are free for home use. All of them are acceptable solutions to
your security needs.
Does not provide full real-time scanning engine.

*My understanding CA is available free for a limited time. Please note that
the page says this:
"Free software offer expires 2/1/05."
The number of times it has been given out as a viable option leads me to
believe that this has been extended. You should, of course, verify this on
your own.

Galen

Galen is quite right, viruses etc will attempt to stop your AntiVirus and
Firewall from working. I can't remember whether it's possible to boot from
the Norton CD to run a virus scan, I know it's possible for Utilities.
