unwanted paragraph symbol in word

Everytime I open a new Word 2000 doc I get a paragraph
symbol after the cursor. Also, when I hit the space bar a
dot appears instead of a space. The box for paragraph
marks is not checked in the tools/option/view window.
This started happening after I copied some text from a
powerpoint doc into Word. Any help in trying to get rid
of it?

Hi Mary

somewhere on the standard toolbar (maybe hiding under the "extra" buttons -
if you've only got one row of toolbars) is a little paragraph icon (normally
to left of zoon % box - when the standard & formatting toolbars are on two
lines) - clicking on this should turn your paragraph markers off (and
clicking on it should turn them on again)
