Some how a "dataminer" of substance got loaded on my computer that tied up
the CPU sush than on reboot computer failed to start and would only go so far
as indiciation error reading disk -

Got it to boot on the restore disk that came with the computer (Gateway)
First tired repair - that process would not go to completion- put me back to
error reading disk

Rebooted after several tires to Restore disk - selected new installation.
That loaded successfully and allowed deletion of some files not desireable -
Then computer rebooted showing to instances of Windows XP - To versoin being
the newly loaded on and the second being the original - Have the original now
working well -

Have no idea where the new version is loaded - Desire to delete or at least
make the boot process default to the original versoin. The new version does
not show up on C:\

Thanks

I have two installations of XP on the same partition

Followed the directions except for one step (bding cautious) (1) Renamed
WINDOWS rather than delete it until problem corrected.
Original boot.ini is as follows
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect

Changing time out to 0 and deleting the third line did not work - error
windows can't load due to missing file (I forgot to wirte down) Used restore
disk to reboot on repair and recoverd to the orignal boot.ini

Does the line "default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]" need to be modified as well to WINNT? or is deleting
the WINDOW directory required?
