unwanted appearances of System 32 folder

I have just re-installed Windows xp Home, downloaded more than 100 updates
and installed Norton 360 from the download. Now, every time I log on, I
receive the window: “System 32 These Files are hidden. This folder contains
files that keep your system running properly. You should not modify its
contents. Show the contents of this folder.â€
AND, in My Computer, when I double-click Local Disk (C:)â€, I open to the
same folder, the same text, nothing more. The only difference is that the
folder is identified at the top: “Local Disk (C:)â€. When my wife logs on, the
System 32 folder does not appear. How can I make this System 32 folder
disappear from my life? Regards, GP Leo

This can be caused by a blank entry, such as can be left behind by an
incomplete program removal, in the:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and/or
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

My GREAT AND GLORIOUS THANKS to Malke at Elephant Boy Computers who put me on
to: MVP Kelly Theriot's site, line 260 on the right-hand side -

HALF the problem is now solved. The other half is that the System 32 folder
still totally occupies my Local Disk (C:) when I double click to open it (see
below). Hoping for another equally swift and efficient suggestion for this
half. Cheers, and highest regards to Malke & Co.

Glad that sorted it for you. I don't understand what you mean by:

"The other half is that the System 32 folder still totally occupies my
Local Disk (C:) when I double click to open it (see below)." There is no
"below" to see and your description isn't clear.

In the meantime, although this doesn't match your symptoms exactly, see
if this helps:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell and in the right pane double click on
(Default) and enter the explicit four characters "none" without the quotes.
Repeat at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell OR

When you open your C drive, what happens if you click on "Show
the content of this folder"?

AND my thanks to Nepatsfan. After solving the problem of having the System 32
folder in my face on log-on, thanks to the tip from Malke (see below), I
worked up the courage to click on awesome and forbidden "Show the contents of
this folder", as suggested by Nepatsfan, after I had opened Local Disk (C:).
Inside were the folders I should have seen upon first opening the Local Disk
(my documents, programs, etc.). After a very careful walk-through, I closed.
On re-opening Local Disk, I find that the System 32 folder has disappeared.
HURRAY! Thank you both for your help in solving a problem which might have
kept me awake!
