I have a grey bar at the top of my screen listing Unused desktop shortcuts. I

would be much appreciated

Right-click on an empty area of it and choose "close". When prompted, say
"yes" since you do want to close this toolbar.

The grey bar runs across the whole of the desktop and is , as far as I can
see, not connected to the taskbar. No toolbar for unused icons

Rightclick open area on taskbar (bottom of screen) and highlight Toolbars.
Now see what toolbars are listed. If you have a toolbar for Unused icons
or Desktop Shortcuts, rightclick and uncheck or delete.
