Unstable system file

I'm trying to run a program that has worked fine until yesterday. I get the
following message:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to erminate the
application.

I ran AVG (virus checker) and found 10 files infected with a trojan - AVG
deleted the files. I ran Spybot and only found cookies. Same with Ad-Ware.
Tried a restore to last week but XP said nothing had changed. Funny, I had
installed a wallpaper changer which I've uninstalled.

Someone suggested scandisk, but I can't find it.

Any suggestions?

Also can be caused by a Trojan installing a file windupdater.exe and
creating registry entries for that file.

AVAST (free antivirus software) can be the cause if SP2 is installed:

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt by copying a backup
copy held in windows\repair to windows\system32.

I have run into this problem before, that virus has two parts.
The first is a file called 'Setup.exe' in the start menu.
The second is an active X control under browser helpers, you
will need to use 'Microsoft® Windows AntiSpyware (Beta)' to
remove the problem.

This is just for your information as you've had excellent advice
regarding your original query.

WinXP doesn't have scandisk. To check your disk for errors, run the
WinXP error-checking tool. To do this:

o Open My Computer
o Right-click your hard disk and click Properties
o Click on the Tools tab
o Click Check Now...
