Unstable files and missing restore points

Whilst running Disk Cleanup (although the problem may be unrelated, I don't
know it just happened at that time) a Windows box popped up saying that some
Windows files and been replaced by unrecognised ones and the originals should
be reinstalled as otherwise Windows could become unstable. It asked for my
Windows disk but my (Dell) computer did not come with one and instead in the
pack that came with the computer it says that if I need to reinstall Windows
I should use System Restore.

So I came out of the box that was asking for the Windows disk and opened up
System Restore, only to find that there were no restore points. I've only had
this computer less than six months but I'm pretty sure I have used System
Restore once before. Plus I double checked and the system restore automatic
check point creation was definitely on, so it's doubly worrying that there
were no points available.

I've rebooted the computer several times now and everything seems ok, but
I'm worried that there might still be something wrong with it. Has anyone
experienced anything like this and does anyone have any ideas of what might
be wrong or how to sort it out?

Cheers
