When I try to reinstall a clean/fresh version of
Windows2000 Professional, the setup program only responds
to certain keystrokes.
I am trying to delete my main partition, but setup will
not register the 'd' keystroke, it will also not register
the 'c' keystroke to create a new partition. It only
accepts Enter.
It is also showing an unpartitioned diskspace of 8MB, I
don't know what that is.

Can anyone tell me how I can get setup to accept the other
keystrokes? Is this a virus?

Thanks for any help,

Eric

It could just be a dirty or malfunctioning keyboard. Try using a different
keyboard and see if you get different results.

As for the 8MB of unpartitioned space. Everytime I've setup Windows 2000 I
always see that. I'm not sure why the installer won't let you paritition
it, but don't worry about it.

Well the problem is, the d and s keys are working
everywhere else. Just not in setup when I am trying to
delete the partitioned diskspace. Thats why I have the
theory that something is preventing them from operating
during that specific time.

Are you by any chance using a none US keyboard or version of windows? This
could mess up your keymappings and cause this problem. At that point in the
setup try pressing every key one by one.

Get a DOS boot disk (if you haven't got one goto www.bootdisk.com)
and remove all the partitions using FDISK, before installing.
The 8Mb partition is NTFS related.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give that a shot.
Thank you both for your responses, I greatly appreciate
your insight.

I checked the bar code on the base of the keyboard, it's a
Microsoft Elite keyboard. I bought it in Canada but it's
the same as any US keyboard, as far as I know they all
come from the same manufacturer.

The enter key responds fine, which is the selection to
install a second copy of the operating system over the
existing one. The other options do not work, d and s.
Which would be deleting and installing a new copy or
partitioning a second part of the drive (allowing you to
install a new one and partition the old one afterwards).

Okay when I click on the "makeboot32" exe my command
window comes up, it asks me to specify which drives i want
to copy the images to, and I type "a". When I hit the "a"
key, the command prompt window closes and im back to the
desktop. No files were copied and the diskette is empty.
Not sure what to do next =/

I'm sorry Eric but I don't know what this has to do with the
advice I gave about using FDISK?
