unrecognised file versions

Dear all,

I'm receiving the following prompt/error message:

"Files that are required for windows to run properly have
been replaced by unrecognised versions. To maintain
system stability Windows must restore the original
versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP home
edition CD-ROM now."

All very straightforward you might think but
unfortunately my PC manufacturer decided not to provide
me with a backup copy of XP (and the blasted thing only
developed this problem out of warranty). Is my only
remedy to perform a system restore?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could select Start, Run, enter "sfc /scannow" without quotes and click on OK.

At the time of posting this message Microsoft seem to have problems so the link may not work for now.

Most PC manufacturers install a backup copy of Windows XP on your hard disk if they do not provide a copy on CD. A search using Windows Explorer will reveal this.

Using Windows XP you need to enable show hidden files. Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings. Next enter Windows Explorer.

I would be concerned as what replaced the files. Before doing anything else update virus definitions and run full anti-virus scan.
