unreadable characters

I have a problem I have never seen before.

XP was working fine and has been for more than a year.
Yesterday I turned on the computer and all of the words
are now characters (like the old Wingdings font). The
icon on the desktop are still were they should be but
their text is all characters. Same for the menu bar. A
few programs do display the readable text but most do not.

It looks to me like the default screen font has somehow
been changed. It has affected all windows and dialog
boxes making it almost impossible to navigate.

Does anybody know how to change it back with re-installing
XP?

Thanks for you help.

I'm havinng the same problem. Someone told me it sounds like a virus, but my McAfee program, which is up to date, couldn't find anything. I found that my fonts folder is empty. This happened overnight. Computer was working fine, we turned it off, went to bed & when we booted up the next morning, it was like this. HELP!!
