Unreadable Characters after installing custom update

I just installed the XP custom updates today on my home PC. My XP SP2 was
already uptodate with all critical updates. After installing the custom
updates, it is now displaying unreadable characters while displaying
filenames, options, buttons, messages erc. Most website texts are appearing
normally. I did not change any language setting myself. I tried to change
the regional /language settings but it did not work.

Please help.

What updates did you install? Was one of them a drive update? If that
might be the case go to device manager to the display adapter and roll
back the driver. Otherwise remove the updates one at a time from
Add/Remove programs.
