Jerry - I know what it is but don't know how to fix it -
that's why I was scanning this newsgroup. Some one else
has logged on with another IM name and these unread
messages are for them. Even though you are now the IM
user it somehow has not released the previous users
information - if I find out how I will drop you a note
and would appreciate the same if you could let me know if
you find out how to remove this annoyance.

Greetings Jerry,

There probably is no messages, they're just from when someone else signed-in under your
Windows XP account. To correct this, just edit the number in the registry. To do so, click
Start, then click Run and enter "regedit.exe" and click OK. Then navigate (it's like Windows
Explorer) to My
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\yourmsnname@h
otmail.com

Where (e-mail address removed) is the passport. Double-click the MessageCount and enter 0 as
the value (this will set back to none). Then click OK, close the registry editor, and log
out.

If you want to disable this feature all together (no registry changes required), download the
TweakUI powertoy:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp (see on the right).

After you have TweakUI installed, click Start, All Programs, Powertoys for Windows XP, and
choose TweakUI for Windows XP. In the TweakUI window, on the left, click the '+' next to
Logon, and choose Unread Mail. Uncheck 'Show unread mail on Welcome screen' and click OK.

Jerry - yes I'm having the same problem - I'm going to
try some other things this evening.

Johnathan,

Thanks so much for the help. This did fix the problem but
I have one further question. The emails from the other
hotmail user are indeed there in his inbox. When I
removed his passport ("Manage my network passwords) from
my user account it looks like it didn't delete this entry
in the registry. Can I simply delete this entire entry
which has his hotmail address?

Again, I greatly (& I'm sure Jerry too) appreciate you
spending the time to respond to everyon that post
(reasonable) issues on this list.

Hi Dennis,

Removing the Passport from the Manage My Network Passwords window will not remove the mail
entry. Yes, you can simply delete the entire key with his e-mail address (in the registry as
shown below).

You're very welcome =).
