Unread Mail Not Updating

In Outlook 2003, I have two messages which have long
since been deleted. However, they are still showing up
under the list of messages in the "Unread Mail" folder.
If I try to preview these messages, I get a "This item
cannot be displayed in the Reading pane." error message.
If I try opening the message outright, I get a "Can't
open this item. The message you specified could not be
found." error. Anyone else seen this, and know of a fix?
