Unprotecting part of a fillable form (header problem)

Hi! I have a form that has been protected by using the Editing Restrictions >
Filling in Forms options but I have a field in the header that people need to
complete and this has been greyed out and they cannot enter the data required
(a simple ID number).

Is there anyway to continue to protect main form but also allow the filling
in of data in the header (which is in the form of a field)? Many thanks!

Even if you could, you would have to open the header view to fill the field.
This is a non-starter.

Either put the field in the body of the document and put a REF field to
reproduce it on other pages (or use a Styleref field to reproduce it in the
headers of the other pages), or if you are using macros in your form
template, you could automatically number the document with whatever sequence
you like - see http://www.gmayor.com/automatic_numbering_documents.htm or
use any one of a number of other methods to prompt for and add data to a
bookmark of docvariable which would be preferable - see
http://www.gmayor.com/SelectFile.htm

Unfortunately there is no space in the document for this to go within it
itself . We have used this before in other forms without any problems from
those completing it. Yes, it's not ideal, but was the only solution when
you've very limited space! I've already used REF fields for that in the
header so it would automatically fill the number in on each page and that
works fine.

I know nothing about macros so will steer clear of them.

It looks as if I will have to unprotect the document, which is a pain. Oh
well...

Many thanks, anyway. Such a quick reponse is much appreciated!

You have the space currently occupied by the first page header? Reduce the
header margin. Put the extra field in the space previously occupied by the
header and format it with a unique style (it's only the name that is
important). In the second page header insert a table cell containing a
Styleref field to call the style applied to the form field on page 1 and
thus reproduce the content. No macros or need to unlock required.
