Unplug PS/2 mouse and no boot

Mobo is GA-6VX7 F2, running a Celeron 433. Kid's PC.

I have a PS/2 mouse connected and a PS/2 keyboard.

I unplugged the PS/2 mouse and plugged in a USB mouse. (Haven't tried a
serial mouse.) USB mouse was detected by XP. I've since unplugged the USB
mouse, as I can't boot with it plugged in and the PS/2 not plugged in. I
had this problem before I plugged the USB mouse in.

When the PS/s mouse is unplugged the farthest spot I boot to is:

POST beeps etc.
then
'Verifying DMI pool data message appears, with success and then just pauses
there.'

I've changed BIOS settings like disabling IRQ12 for PS/2 mouse and anything
else I could find, including changing halt to 'no errors'
Tried the mobo manual for jumpers. Can't see anything there.

Help. This isn't lots of fun.

Thanks in advance

USB to PS/2 adaptor?

I've had a few USB mouse(s) (!) and they've all come with a USB (female) to
PS/2 (male) adaptor for connection to standard PS/2 port rather than a USB
port.

Alternatively can an old PS/2 mouse be plugged in but left unused?

Martin.

Good ideas thanks Martin and I have in fact left the old PS/2 mouse plugged
in and just disabled it in XP, enabling me to use the USB mouse.

I'd rather not have to do it this way but if it works, it'll do for
now/forever.

Maybe I'll find one of those adapters in the cupboard, as I think USB uses a
little more CPU power? and this processor hasn't got much to spare...s

Thanks very much.

Perhaps I should use one of this little, green adapters, as a USB mouse
would use a little, (negligible?), more CPU than a PS/2 one?
