unmountable boot volume

I've done a ton of searching and reading, but nothing that seems to fit
my situation. I had a desktop that is about 3 years old. It worked
fine for the last 2.5 years. Then I started getting the unmountable
boot volume error. I've reloaded xp pro numerous times and applied all
the service packs with no luck. I thought it was the hard drive, but I
recently switched that drive to a new computer and put a new drive in
the previous computer that had the error. I loaded a new version of xp
on the new drive and I get the same error. So, the only difference in
this computer is the hard drive and the windows installation. I've
also pulled the memory from the computer and tested with different
sticks, but I still get it. I found that if I boot into safe mode and
immediately reboot letting it boot as normal the next time, it works
fine. Seeing as how it's not the hard drive or the memory, the only
other thing that I can think of is the mb or cpu. Has anyone seen this
happen before and know of a fix? Thanks.

Most fixes do not apply since it is a new hard drive.
Some have resolved this issue by reseating the IDE cable and also replacing
with an 80 conductor cable.

Actually, it's not a newer drive. It's just a different drive that I
had for a while and hadn't used, so I ended up putting it in the older
pc as the os and moving the other (faster) hard drive to the newer pc.

The point is that it is a different drive thus most likely ruling out the
drive as a possibility.
