Unlocking a document

I am using word 2003 on a one month old computer. Apparently, in the process of trying to learn more about how to use word I've locked all of my word documents (and possibly powerpoint too) where I can open and view a file but can't modify it. The 'off-line help' function suggests clicking on view-->outline--> and clicking on the icon with a padlock on the relevant toolbar, but because the document is locked nothing happens when I click on this icon. Your helpful suggestions will be much appreciated.
