Unlock the header in a protected document

I am using Word 2007. The document I am creating will use forms where users
will only be able to edit the form controls that I've added to the document,
such as those where they can type text and select checkboxes. I've added text
controls for the "company name" and a "product serial number" to the header
so that users can fill out this information. However, when I protect the
document so that users can only fill in the forms that are in the document
and no other text, it appears as though they do not have access to the header
area so that they cannot type the company name or product serial number. How
can I make it so that the form fields in the header of the protected document
are editable?

You cannot manually access fields in the header unless the header is open.
The answer is to create a userform to collect the data and write it either
to docvariables and update the associated docvariable fields in the header,
or write the result directly to the header. The former is simpler and does
not require the document to be unlocked.

Hi Graham,

Thank you so much for replying.

I was able to use your information as well as your link within your document
to

http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/StyleRef.htm#FormField

that explained in simple terms how to add a character style to the text
field and then to use the StyleRef command in the header in order to
reference that character style so that the the information in the header is
automatically updated as soon as someone enters text in the text field that
is contained in the body of the topic.

It works great now.

Thank you!
