Unknown process (aspnet_wp.exe)

I have detected a process "aspnet_wp.exe" running at the
background and I can't terminate it. Every time I try to
do "end process" it does nothing (I tried also with NSW
Process viewer).
What does this process do and how can I stop it?

The username of this application (that I can see in the
Task Manager) is "ASPNET".
What does it mean?

I'm using WinXP SP2 (with .NET Framework 1.1)
 
But I have never seen it before and I'm using the .NET
framework for a long time.
