Edward

Hi.

I'm a bit suspicious that my PC may be slowing a bit...

Can you help me identify these .exe files in Task Manager (Processes). They
take up quite a bit of useage.

fxssvc.exe
smss.exe
crss.exe
lsass.exe
dragdiag.exe
SM1bg.exe

Some may, of course, belong to programmes you've never heard of, which I
will understand. But if you know any of them and whether I can shut them
down during normal use, I would appreciate your help.

TIA

Ed

fxssvc.exe

The XP fax service. If you don't fax from your PC you can uninstall
this.

XP user sessions, needed.

client server runtime. I'm not sure what this does, it seems to be a
system process.
lsass.exe

local security auth server. needed. This can get infected.
dragdiag.exe

You must have a SpeedTouch USB modem. :)
SM1bg.exe

USB driver for MP3 players. Napster might install this one.

When in doubt scan your PC for viruses and run a spyware check. Better
safe than sorry!

Download Ad-Aware 6.0 and scan your PC for the presence of spyware:

You may wish to try the Panda ActiveScan Free Online Scanner.
Just click on the "Scan your PC" box.

Hi Edward,

A description of smss.exe, crss.exe and lsass.exe can be found in this MSKB
article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=263201
although the article is for WIN2K, the description of the processes would be
equally applicable to XP

fxssvc.exe is Microsoft's Fax Service. You could either uninstall the
service or set it to Manual in Administrative Tools>Services

dragdiag.exe is a diagnostic application for Speedtouch modem.

SM1bg.exe is, apparently, the Cypress USB Mass Storage Adapter that is
installed with either iTunes or Napster

Regards,

Thanks for that, Carey. I run Spybot regularly and have both the latest
McAfee and Zonealrm Pro.

Thanks, Patti.

That is exactly the info I needed. I'll follow up and check it al out.

Thanks again.

Ed

Thanks for all this. Just what I was looking for. Yes I did do Napster and
I do use Speedtouch.

Cheers,

Ed
