"unknown disk" on XP installation

Hi all,

When running through an installation of XP Home, it comes up on the
partition screen with 4 entries all the same,

unknown disk
(there is no disk in this drive.)

It's a SATA drive (maxtor), and the motherboard also has a RAID controller
on it. however, i have turned off RAID and am still having the same problems.
I've also tried installing the controller for the RAID by pressing F6 when
starting the installation, and it's still the same.

Is there something i'm missing?

Any help would be greatly apprecieated

Also i forgot to mention, if i try to proceed it comes up with

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA

0x00000050

I've replaced the ram, and still the same.

Not sure what a "partition screen" is?
One HARD Drive?
Using what controller? MB Controller or PCI controller?
HDD is set as master on cable and jumpers, and connected at end of cable?
Did you install SATA drivers during boot up?

by partition screen i mean the screen where you select which drive/partition
you want to install on to.
yes, one hard drive, tried it with a FAT partition created and as a blank
disk.
The controller is on the MB, it's a GigaRAID controller.

As for installing SATA drivers, where do i do that? I've only seen the
option for installing the SCSI/RAID drivers.

The cable is connected at both ends, and i didn't think SATA drives had
jumpers for master and slave?

Does drive show up during boot up in BIOS?
I could see 4 blank entries during boot up in BIOS, but I would think there
would be only one entry when Windows searches for hard drive.

How many controllers are on MB?

The SATA drive is connected to Raid controller as master (on end of ribbon
cable)
I would leave RAID on in BIOS and install drivers by pressing F6.

BIOS has to see controller and HD during boot up.

I know with SATA PCI card connected and one drive connected, BIOS will show
MB controllers with ni drives connected, then flash SATA Controller listing
one HDD connect
