Unknown coding in header

I am working with a large document (currently over 100
pages and growing) that currently has about 13 sections.
The headers are simple and the same for each section. The
headers contain only a small image near the right edge.
Recently I have noticed { SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT } in the
left top position of the headers. I did not purposely do
anything to add such code. Can you tell me what it is?

That's a field code. Press Alt+F9 to toggle between the codes and the field
results.
