'Unknown' Access2003

J

Jim Douglas

I use a program called ShortWaveLog, which uses Access as it's database.
It's worked great for over a year and now has been killed by something.

I get an error from the application saying the database is not the correct
version, I have completly removed and re-installed from the authors
websiteand still get the same error. When I try to open the database file
within Access 2003 and double-click on a table it get an error

Unknown

After this error I get the screen which sends the error to Microsoft, after
50+ times doing this I expect someone from Microsoft to feel sorry for me
and email me the fix, just kidding! I have read the ShortWaveLog web site
and they indicate I should be on the latest MDAC and JET stuff which I have
updated to no avail!

Anyone have any idea as I love the program and life sucks without it!

The database is apparently corrupted. See

for suggestions.

Hi Jim,

I was curious about this program, so I Googled ShortWaveLog.
I use a program called ShortWaveLog, which uses Access as it's database.
Actually, it uses the JET database. Access is simply a front-end program
that can work with many databases. The front-end for ShortWaveLog is written
in C#.

One of the first things I found is shown on this page:

http://www.shortwavelog.com/default-english.html
"The SWLog Yahoo Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/swlog is the best place
to ask questions."

Have you posted your question there? Also, I found the following statement
under the question "Q: Is there anything else going on behind-the-scenes?":

"The program also makes automatic backups of your database to the C:\ folder
every 15 days. There is no way to disable this behavior. This was recently
implemented because so many people were deleting their database file without
a backup."

So, do you have a backup in your root folder that works okay?

Tom

I re-installed the entire program from the web-site which would include a
new copy of the empty database?

Hi Jim,

Did you delete the C:\SWLog folder after uninstalling? The reason I ask is
that the author specifically states that uninstalling the program does not
delete the user's data (ie. the swlog.mdb file). A re-install would likely
not overwrite an existing data file as well.

If you renamed or deleted the swlog.mdb file before attempting a reinstall,
then it makes me wonder if there is something more serious affecting your
installation, and the installation of Access 2003 on other people's
computers. In another recent thread, a person reports no luck in opening a
..mdb file even after uninstalling Access and re-installing. You might want to
read the following thread:

http://groups-beta.google.com/group...e_frm/thread/982bdb25e8d6093/3b1b9755b5641bcd

Kinda makes one wonder if something more sinister isn't going on...some kind
of recent virus or worm that disables Microsoft Access. Just a guess, but I
note that in both cases the users are using Access 2003.

Can you open any other .mdb databases on your PC? Did you have a backup of
the .mdb file in your root directory (C:\)? If so, can you open that copy?

The problem with this approach is that this would be an invasion of
your privacy. How would MS know how to ask specifically you to call
them.

The paranoiacs, and I'm one of them <smile>, would be quite concerned
about this approach.

That said when my operating systems BSOD I do get a prompt where I can
log on to Passport and my BSOD details will be tracked for six months.
If MS ever gets a fix to my problem they will then email me. This
approach would be fine by me.

I didn't mention this earlier, but one of the Microsoft Access Program
Managers (I think it was Tim Getsch) told our Access user group that they
intentionally filter out duplicate error messages that originate from the
same IP address. So, while Jim may have sent it 50 times, they only saw one
copy.

Interesting. I would've thought MS would be interested in all the
crashes.
