Unique Computer Names within two separate workgroups

I have a peer to peer network consisting of 7 computers, segrated into 3
workgroups, each system is physically connected via a hub.
In two of the workgroups, I have 2 computers within each workgroup that have
the same computer name. The software I am running requires that these
computers have these specific names.

Whenever I connect every computer within each workgroup to the hub, an error
message appears stating that duplicate computer names have been detected on
the network.

I know that computers within a particular workgroup must have a unique name
(no two computers can share the same name).
But, does this criteria also apply to computers within mulitple workgroups,
which are networked together?

I would greatly appreciate any assistance in solving this problem.

As long as the two computers are on the same physical network they must have
different names. The only possible solution for this would be to use
routers (or some other address allocation scheme) to break the network up
into different address ranges where the two same-name computers cannot see
each other.

It think it would be more fun to find the developer who designed software
that forces a machine for have a specific name and slap him senseless,...but
then it sounds like he is senseless to begin with so I guess we'd have to
slap him till something else happened.

As fun as it would be it wouldn't solve the problem - though it would
relieve some of the stress involved. :)
