Short of taking a flamethrower to my harddrive, what is the best way to
remove all traces of Norton Internet Security from my system?

Try uninstalling it first.

There used to be a small program called SymClean that was on the Symantec
site. It was tough to find, but it removed everything related to Norton
Antivirus and the Security Suite. You might find it with a Google search.

do a search on nortons support site for SYMNRT. It is updated frequently and
does a good job of removing all traces of symantec products.
