uninstalling dual boot

L

Linea Recta

I'm asking this for someone without internet access, and I don't have
experience with dual boot installations myself.

She has Windows 2000 installed on drive C: and later on she installed
Windows XP on drive D:
Upon booting there is a countdown menu for booting Windows version (default
XP). This start up menu seems to be made after installing Windows XP.
Now she decided after all that she wants to remove Windows XP from D:

What's the best procedure for removing Windows XP, without the risk of
(boot) problems with the remaining Windows 2000?

Control Panel|System|Advanced|Startup and Recovery; here you can set the
"Default operating system:" Then you can remove the option from boot.ini
located in the root of the system partition(usually C:\). If you can post
the text we can help you with that.

Delete or format the "D:\" partition.

In Windows XP, I assume?

Might do that. Thanks so far.

"In Windows XP, I assume?"

Doesn't matter. Both OS's use the same boot.ini

OK Dave Patrick,

The first part of your advice seems to have worked.
Below is the contents of her boot.ini

----------------------------------
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
----------------------------------

Thanks &

You can remove the second line reference;
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS

So you'll end up with what's below. The timeout has no function when there
is only one startup option.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect

Removing Windows XP seems to have succeeded and Windows 2000 boots OK now.
Only one thing: sound of DVD players doesn't seem to work anymore. But this
can be due to fitting other (additional)sound card. (different soundcard was
placed, while the old one was disabled in BIOS). Of course it could be that
they forgot to change the audio cables too... Some people really keep asking
for troubles... :)
