My windows folder has huge number of folders with titles like:
$NtUninstallKB873333$. some are over 8 MB in size.
are they all likely to be relevant? can I delete them with problems?

Those are the uninstall files for the respective updates with that KB
number, installed through windows update. They are needed to uninstall the
update. If things are working well and you don't think you need to
uninstall an update, then yes they can be deleted (or burn to CD just to be
extra safe). After that you can remove the entry for that update in
Add/Remove programs.

Detlev gave you a link to a utility on Doug Knox site to automate their
removal. Note: do not remove the $hf_mig$ folder. It's needed for future
updates.
