May be the wrong NG? but I mention xp & 98SE!!!

I wish to put Win 98se on this laptop also, but unsure how to accomplish
this...help please.
If above not possible then I'd like to remove XP and install Win98SE.
I do not have xp CD, but have 98se CD.

You'll have to reformat the hard disk/partition if you want to downgrade to
Win 98SE.

Hi Terry,

Assuming that your laptop's hard drive consists of one partition that spans
the entire size of the drive, you would need to use a third-party
application (such as Partition Magic or BootItNG, for example) in order to
create another partition for the WIN98 installation without having to delete
the current partition (and thereby losing your XP installation) in order to
create two partitions. If you do opt to purchase and utilize a third-party
application, ensure that the application also has a boot manager.......when
you install 98 with XP already installed, 98 overwrites the NT-style boot
sector, and you won't be able to boot into XP. With a third-party boot
manager, you can work around this.

If you opt to remove XP and install 98 instead, and XP has been installed on
a Primary partition that has been formatted NTFS, you will first need to
delete the Non-DOS partition, then create a Primary DOS partition.....you
can do the partitioning work using the updated (for hard drives over 64G)
FDISK utility on a WIN98 startup floppy disk. If you don't have a WIN98
startup floppy disk, you can d/load the file to create one from here:

Click on the link for Windows 98 SE OEM, and choose to d/load to hard drive
(do NOT save directly to a floppy disk as this DOES NOT create the startup
disk). Once the file has been d/loaded, put a formatted floppy disk in the
drive and then double-click on the d/loaded file in order to create the
startup disk.
Next, d/load the "Updated fdisk for Windows 98 bootdisks" from the same site
(scroll down the page a bit to locate it). The d/load is a zipped file.
Unzip the fdisk.exe file directly to the newly created startup floppy disk,
and choose Yes to overwrite the current file.

Once you have created the Primary DOS partition and have restarted, with the
startup floppy disk still in the drive, format the partition and then
install WIN98.

Excellent reply Patti, several relative peaces of alternative info for me to
work on, but I am awaiting a manual for the laptop which I have recently
purchased, with the strange mouse built in the keyboard.
Also Win Xp Pro is strange new territory for me, but I have reformatted my
main Win 98 PC ok recently & I have partition magic.
Also I have an external floppy, but can't find where to connect it the lead
to.!

I've never been too fond of using a laptop's "built-in" mouse, opting to
plug in a PS2 mouse when I have occasion to use a laptop.........I guess
it's an "acquired taste" <g>
I enjoy installing WINXP, as you can do the partitioning and formatting from
within the OS's Setup routine. You did state that you don't have the install
CD for XP, and chances are that there is a hidden partition on the laptop's
hard drive that contains XP recovery (probably a compressed drive image).

If your version of Partition Magic is less than version 7, you won't be able
to install it in XP.......but you can work around that by using the two
Rescue diskettes that you can create from within Partition Magic.

If you are wanting to boot from an external floppy drive, the BIOS must
support booting from an external device.
