Boot the one you want to keep. Open Windows Explorer and delete the system
folders from the one you don't want. Start/run C:\boot.ini, remove the line
referencing the unwanted system from the [operating systems] section.
Right click My Computer > system properties > advanced > settings under
startup & recovery > system start up :-Default operating system >edit >
remove the line referencing the unwanted OS system > SAVE >REBOOT

In that case you did *not* format the drive, you did a new install -
probably into the same folder, with a new registry and a resulting mess.
IT would be safest to go back and do a proper format and install after
booting the XP CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement
take New Install. When it asks you to confirm where, (this is the
important bit) hit ESC; select and delete the current partition and make
a new RAW one to be formatted at the next stage
