Are you using the wireless router as DHCP server? Some wireless router may have issues with Vista. This link may help,

Vista Wireless disconnects ...gone. it looks like Vista is causing the router to do something, but not quite sure. i use a Belkin wireless G F5D7000 version 6. i am connecting to ...

Sounds like you might be connecting to a neighbors wireless network. Do you
have a wireless router set up with a secure password? Wireless is not free
over the airways. You must set up a wireless router or an access point and
then secure it with strong WPA password. When you plug into an ethernet port,
you are not using wireless at all. It uses your ethernet card instead. Your
Vista computer is trying to use the wireless card. Look for help in Network &
Sharing Center on the Vista computer or research Wireless Networking on the
Vista Help site. Or simply disable the wireless card and use the ethernet
connection. You don't say how you connect to the Internet--what kind of
broadband modem you have.

the best solution is to plug the medialounge into the router and not
have it directly connected to your PC.

if you don't reconfigure this way, when you look at the two network
connections on the Vista machine, are they both set to private and
is file sharing and media sharing on? What IP addresses are these
using? You can avoid these issues by plugging the medialounge into
the router.

how do i then configure this to allow my media lounge to find my shared drive
of video files?

are you using the D-Link application or "native" Windows Media
Sharing? With everything on the same network it may still work
without any changes OR you set it up again. with everything on the
same network, it should be pretty easy.

how do i then configure this to allow my media lounge to find my shared drive
of video files?

i was using the dlink software but media player 11 seemed to take over the
job.even so that worked fine on xp.i have tried to connect directly from the
router to the unit but it hasnt found any media sever and nothing has
appeared on the pc to indicate that any changes have occured!

which D-Link medialounge?
where do you store your media files? in the standard pictures, music
and video locations?

on the machine that hosts the media files, go to Start, Network then
select Network and Sharing Center from the menu bar.

Is Media Sharing ON?

Network discovery?

File Sharing?

Public Folder Sharing?

Is the Network Private?

it is a dlink dsm 320.all the media sharing settings are correct.my media
files are stored on an external hard drive which i have shared also.the
network is public and when i change it to privete it changes itself back
again!

what is the external drive connected to and how?

if you are not using the wired ethernet, go into device manager and
disable it for now. reboot.

now, after you reboot, can you set the wireless network on the host
machine to private?

the drive is connected to the pc via usb.my wireless network is already set
to private.when i plug the dlink into the ethernet socket another connection
appears "local area connection 7".after trying for a while the connection
remains but is unidentified.in the properties ipv4 is local, ipv6 is limited
and media state is enabled.my wireless works perfectly but if i connect my
dlink wirelessly the playback is terrible.

I've been trying to get you to use only one connection from the pc.
Let's try using the wired connection from the pc to the router.
Don't use the wireless on the computer. Is this what you are doing?
Can you disable the wireless on the computer, reboot with only the
wired cable plugged into the router..

The DSM320 should then be configured to point to the wireless
router.

Media playback is best if one end of the connection is wired. So
either the host computer or the DLink. I'm guessing your computer is
closest to the router thus I am asking you to try using the wired
connection on the pc.
