Unexplained rebooting

G

Geoff Hassell

I am running XP Pro SP1 with all the latest updates.

I am getting spasmodic rebooting but ONLY when I am connected to the
internet. It never seems to happen when I am not on line.

The event viewer gives the following message :

Event Type: Error

Event Source: Service Control Manager

Event Category: None

Event ID: 7001

Date: 13/03/2004

Time: 23:00:03

User: N/A

Computer: D27FJ6X9DS7

Description:

The Alerter service depends on the Workstation service which failed to start
because of the following error:

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

It is almost always 7001.

I have looked on the net & tried the following

If NetBIOS over Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is
disabled, this error will occur.

To correct the problem:

1. Open Device Manager and check Show hidden devices on the View menu.

2. Double-click Non-Plug and Play Drivers and NetBIOS over Tcpip.

3. Select Use this device (enable).

4. Use Regedt32 to navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon.

5. Double-click DependOnService.

6. Click in the MULT-STRING Editor to de-select the entries.

7. If LanmanServer is NOT listed, add LanmanServer as a new line.

8. Exit Regedt32.

9. Shutdown and Restart your computer.

Still thge problem persists. All my drivers are up to date and there are no
conflicts anywhere.

Any ideas greatfully received

Thanks

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Notice you have a BTinternet addy, your not on BT broadband by any chance
are you? The reason I ask is because I used to have this problem a while
back with BT Broadband USB ADSL voyager modem and XP Pro SP1. PC used to
reboot for no reason but only when connected to Internet and especially as
soon as i tried to download anything. I was using a pirate copy of XP at the
time and i think this was my problem. I was forced to revert back to
windows98, which solved the problem. I'm now using a legit copy of XP Pro
with no problems whatsoever. I haven't altered anything except installed the
legit copy of XP so I reckon that's what was causing the reboots.

On the otherhand this may not be your problem, just presuming you have
Broadband cos of your addy. if not hope you find the answer.

One thing you could try if you haven't already is to turn off the "auto
restart after a problem" feature in XP. Goto Start/Control
Panel/System/Advanced. Click on Settings in Startup and Recovery and uncheck
"Automatically Restart" in the System Failure section. This may of not work,
it didn't for me but you never know.

Yes I am using BT Broadband. Copy of XP is legit!!

I presume that by turning of "auto restart"I will get a clearer error
message, is that what you mean?

I have had no trouble downloading anything, the reboot seems to happen when
I close a window that is connect to the not, or disconnect something like
messenger but as I said only when I am connected to the Internet.

Thanx Rob anyway for your suggestions, but I see going back to 98 as a
retrograde step.

Cheers

Good that's what we like to hear ) Hypocrite that I am

Not as such. This is just a way to stop your PC rebooting each time it
encounters a problem. Error logging will still occur so long as you have
that option checked (in the system failure section).

Definately not connected to my problem then. Strange one that, hope you find
a solution.

I know what you mean, I did too. I was really looking forward to using XP.
98 wasn't that bad, and at least i could download 2 things at once without
taking a huge download speed decrease. That's the only thing about XP that
bugs me, and thats with Broadband too!!
