unexpected shut-down

There are times when the computer will shut down for no
reason. It gives no advanced warning. The screen just goes
black and then about 15 seconds later the whole computer
goes off as if I had shut it down.
I am using a Compaq Armada laptop, but it is plugged in
and has a good full battery also.
Today it happened three times. Each time I was on the same
page of a website trying to register as a new member.
It does not have anything to do with how long the unit has
been turned on, or the temperature in the room (cool) or
being on the Internet or not.
It has happened before when I was using a program and was
not online. When it happened that time, I thought it was a
glitch in the program that I was using.
This does not act like a motherboard or any type of
hardware problem. It acts like it is a programming problem.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ron

My 4 year old Dell laptop does this, and I don't think
it's software related; the laptop just overheats. I solved
it by proping up the laptop on some 1/2" high supports
that let air get under the machine. (It origianlly came
with a docking station that accomplished this but I don't
have it anymore.)

Also, since I have a regular keyboard plugged in, I used
to leave papers on top of the laptop keyboard. I stopped
doing that to keep it cooler too. I rarely have this
problem any more.

Good luck!
