Unexpected Crashing

My Pc has recently started freezing every so often,
especially when I run IE. A message appeared in the
bottom left hand corner saying IE was corrupt and to run
CHKDSK. Having done this, IE was still corrupt, and the
computer continued to crash. I shut off the mains power
for 30 seconds, to clear any temporary memory (in the
hope this problem would be resolved), and on boot-up,
just before windows desktop appears, at the welcome
screen, I am given the message that the default user
profile cannot be loaded, due to lack of storage, and a
temporary one will be loaded instead. All of my settings
are stored on my computer, yet I cannot load them. It
seems as if there are still considerable problems with my
system, apparently with many corrupt files (from running
chkdsk)yet this program ceases to fix them. Are there any
programs I can download or use that will fix my system,
or am I just best completely re-fromatting the system? Is
there any way I can re-install windows, without losing
any data from the hard drive, but removing the problems
within? I have run the housecall.trendmicro.com virus
checker, and no viruses were found. Any help will be
extremely appreciated.

Thanking in advance

Sounds like bad hardware that caused CHKDSK files to be written in such
number that it may have also filed up your hard drive.

Full hard drive AND it's possibly bad.

Thanks, but how the hell do I get rid of this problem,
preferably without having to re-format

If it is your hard drive going bad, you cannot get away without at
leastgetting a new hard drive or getting yours repaired. If you don't do
that soon, you will not only be formatting and reinstalling, but you will
have lost all your data that you have not backed up lately.

My suggestion is to back you stuff (your files) up NOW. If the compute is
going to die, you better have your stuff off there.

Then you need to find some way of testing the hard drive. If the computer
is under warranty, let them do it - letting them know that if they have to
replace the hard drive, you would prefer an image made of the hard drive and
that image transferred to the new hard drive so you don't notice anything -
get that in writing before you leave your computer with them.
