uneven chart aspect ratio

when I make a chart, the horizontal axis is always longer
in length than the vertical axis. this is inaccurate when
I have the same number of scale points (say 10) for each
axis. the chart should look like a box or square, not a
landscape shape. any clue about how to maintain "real"
aspect ratio?
