unending update

On my - new from Dell - XP Pro SP2 laptop, I get a "Windows Found Update"
message and, of course, I install the update (MSXM4 SP2), and Windows tells
me that the update was successfully installed. However, the next time I boot
up, there's the update again, asking to be installed -- and again - and
again - and again - never ending. No matter how many times I install it,
this update keeps wanting installation each time I reboot. On my C-drive, I
see dozens of text document log files which I am told were for each
installation. They do not seem to get deleted after this "installation."
Does anyone have an idea of why this particular update installation never
seems to "take" - even though it reports being successfully installed each
time I do it? Thank you.
