"Undo" and "Redo" are suddenly grayed out

All of a sudden this morning, I can't undo anything in Word. I'm in Word 2003
and Windows XP and before you suggest it, I can't upgrade yet due to
conflicts with certain systems at work.

Everything was fine yesterday; then today I get this. I've rebooted to no
avail. I ran the "Detect and Repair" from the Help menu, but that didn't do
the trick either.

I noticed in the help menu that instead of it saying "Microsoft Word 2003"
it says "Microsoft Word SP3" -- so a service pack has been installed. I don't
know if that has something to do with it or not. I asked a co-worker who
also has the SP3, but Undo and Redo are working just fine for him.

I wish I could say I am perfect and never need to undo, but that's just not
the case.

Can you Undo with Ctrl-Z, so that it's only the button that's not
working?

No, the Ctrl-Z and -Y were no good either.

I've already uninstalled and reinstalled Office as my "solution." But I'd
still be interested to see if an actual explanation ever surfaces.
