Undesired "Funhouse Mirror" Effect when Rotating Clip

Input file is MPEG-4 in .avi format, 640x480 pixels, from my Canon
S1-IS digital camera.

When I captured the video, the camera was rotated 90 degrees. After
import into moviemaker, I rotated the clip 90 degrees to set things
right, but moviemaker apparently "stretched" the result in the
horizontal direction (instead of inserting bars or something), so now
the aspect ratio of objects and and people is messed up.

How can I rotate my clip without messing up the aspect ratio?
Re-capturing the scene is not an option, it was a once-only
opportunity. Am I going to have to turn my monitor sideways to watch
it?

If Movie Maker is not working to your
satisfaction when rotating a file...try
the following:

The following freebie will rotate .avis and .mpegs.

Virtualdub Ver: 1.6.11
http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

Open your clip in the program and go to...
(actually, it may be a good idea to experiment
with a copy of your movie file)

Video / Filters / Add / Rotate / OK..choose
right or left...OK...OK...

Your new file size will be huge unless you
use compression so go to...

Video / Compression....you can try them all
to see what works best for you...Microsoft
Video 1 works pretty well for me.

Now...go to...File / Save As AVI...
Choose a Save location / Give the file a name...
and left click the Save button.

end users, containing the executable and
supporting files. Unzip the contents into a
new folder and run VirtualDub.exe. (Do not
run it directly from the zip file!)
