unable to view color fill changes unless I print preview

unable to view color fill color changes and font colors when I click the tab
to change colors. I can only view it by Print Preview. This does not happen
on any other computer I use.
I should be able to see the new color I selected in fill or font on my
screen, and I cannot.
Using Excel 2003 on a Dell Dimension 2400
