Unable to stop Messenger Alerts

I am unable to stop the winodws messenger alerts (for new
email) from poping up on the bottom right of my screen. I
have gone to Tools...Options....Preferences tab and
unchecked ALL the Alerts options, but I still get pop up
notifications about emails that I receive.

I never had this problem until I upgraded to Windows XP.
Is there a solution, or is it a bug (which I can't seem
to find a way to notify Microsoft about).

Actually this is a bug in Windows Messenger 4.x. To stop them, assuming you're using Windows
Messenger 4.6 or later, simply turn off the MSN Add-In. To do so, click the Tools menu,
then Add-Ins, then click MSN.
