Unable to shutdown properly

I have Windows XP service pack 1.
When I click on shutdown, the window pops up to ask if I want to shut down,
restart or standby, then when I select one, the window disappears but nothing
else happens. The machine does not shut down. I can’t shutdown my computer
properly. Has anyone heard about anything like this?
This makes me very unhappy and is affecting my relationships with the people
around me.

Here is a link to an excellent shutdown troubleshooter:

What usually happens is that some program and/or process is refusing to
exit gracefully. Most often the rogue program is malware, so be sure
your computer is 100% spyware and virus-free. If you need help in doing
this, please post back to this thread.
