Hello All, I am experiencing this strange problem with
sharing files between two windows xp PCs (one laptop other
desktop).
I am having problem with the desktop which is connected to
belking router thru a cable and my laptop is connected to
belkin router by wireless means.
Initially i was able to share files and folders between
two computers without any set up. Once the Windows
prompted me with a Question if I want to block access to
my (desktop) computer from other computers. I clicked Yes.
Now I want to turn on my sharing but I am not able to do
so. I tried unistalling network adapter and file sharing
service etc.
* Importantly I am able to access internet with it.
* MY PC which is not able to share files is not able to
ping itself and its ip cannot be pinged from other computer
* When I used the networking wizard for small biz and
home, the Computer under problem is not able to sense
other computer, while other computer could see this
computer in NEtwork Places but is not able to access it
* I did a network diagnosis and the result was Network
adapter failed and also Ping local host failed.
Can someone help me with this situation ?
thanks,
Vivek

Vivek,

Please start by providing ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Please label each with version (Home / Pro) of XP.

If "Windows prompted (you) with a Question if I want to block access", then you
have a third party firewall somewhere on that computer. AFAIK, ICF doesn't
prompt for that. And you can't resolve that by un installing your network
adapter, network software, etc.

You need to check in your Program (All Programs?) menu, and find a firewall
program. You then need to configure it for file sharing, by opening ports TCP
139, 445 and UDP 137, 138, 445, and / or by identifying the other computers as
present in the Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall configurations are a very common
cause of (network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

For the other computer, if pinging local host failed, then your network or
network software is incorrectly installed. Start by un installing then re
installing the network adapter. Reboot after each action.

Vivek, please don't post your questions in the middle of another thread. That
action interferes with your being helped as well as the help for the original
poster.

And Vivek, please don't contribute to the spread of email address mining
viruses. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a bit
safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - never post your address unmunged.

Chuck, thanks for response. I am a new user here so didnt
know the Do's and Dont's . I gave email address since I
thought I would be notified in email if I am not able to
trace back my posting. I did uninstall and reinstal the
adapter. Will do it again. My firewall is Norton firewall.
I dont know how to open those ports you mentioned. I will
provide you details of ping before tonight.
Thanks a ton for the help. Both my postings are inter
related.
What did you mean by ICF ? is this a third party
firewall ?
thanks,
Vivek

Vivek,

So welcome to the forums. Wear flame resistant clothing.

ICF is the XP included (inbound protection only) firewall. It's known to cause
problems with file sharing so you are advised to only enable it on a direct
connection to the internet, never on a LAN connection where you might want to do
file sharing (as you are doing). Or you should open the ports as I listed.

I'm not sure whether NPF is rules based or zone based. But I'll bet you that's
one of your problems. I use Zone Alarm. And Linksys to keep ZA quiet. ;-}

WRT your email address, that's a mistake many make. And regret.

Chuck, I just came home and disabled Norton and first my
good computer appeared. Next my trouble computer also

ports you mentioned, As far as I tried to configure
norton security, there is a properties box with a
firewall tab, in that there is an option called HTTP
ports list. do i need to add these ports to that list ?
enlighten me. you think were would i can enable / disable
firewall ? is it the stuff that comes automatically while
creating a dial up connection ?
regarding the email, that is a junk email. i dont mind if
it is flooded . thanks for concern. just
enlighten me on the ports thing and i will stop bugging
you. Vivek

Vivek,

Since you're on a wireless LAN, it would be better if you can only open the
ports specified to the Local (Trusted) zone. But I think what you're seeing is
where you start. Let us know how it goes please.

I don't mind if you bug us, it's better to have your network protected and
working than unprotected and working. Unprotected computers on the internet
become spam relays or further flood it with more infection probes.

As far as posting your email address unmunged, its OK that you are using a
throwaway account, but when you post like that you encourage others to do the
same. Leading to more spam targets, and eventually to another customer and
supporter of a spammer. Leading to yet more spam. Don't support spam please.

Vivek,

I believe these Symantec articles contain all the information you need. Sorry
that Symantec doesn't like to make it easy to post their URLs.
