Unable to set up a network

Right clicking a folder on my system and selecting "Sharing and Security"
from the displayed menu yields a dialog box that has no "Share this folder
on the network" checkbox available. I gather from my reading, that this
implies that the computer is not on a network.

On the same display is the statement "As a security measure, Windows has
disabled remote access to this computer. However, you can enable remote
access and safely share files by running the 'Network Setup Wizard'". I've
run the 'Network Setup Wizard', and it fails to establish a network, as
evidenced by the fact that again selecting "Sharing and Security" yields the
same screen as described above, with no changes.

I'm running Win'XP Home on two machines. I have firewalls disabled on both
machines.

I'm successfully pinging each PC one from the other.

What do I do? How do I create a network? I am trying to set it up so that
I can share folders on one machine with another.

That doesn't imply whether the computer is or isn't on a network. It
means that File and Printer Sharing is disabled.

What are you telling the Wizard when it asks how the computer connects
to the Internet? Some choices disable File and Printer Sharing.

How do the computers connect to the Internet?
I'm running Win'XP Home on two machines. I have firewalls disabled on both
machines.

Firewalls don't prevent the Sharing tab from appearing. If the only
firewall is the Windows Firewall, enable it, and allow exceptions.
I'm successfully pinging each PC one from the other.

That shows that the PCs are, in fact, on a network. They're pinging
each other over the network.
What do I do? How do I create a network? I am trying to set it up so that
I can share folders on one machine with another.

I think that giving the right answers to the Network Setup Wizard will
get everything to work.

I have a very similar problem. I cannot enable file sharing. I get the error
message:-
An error occured when trying to share (folder name). The data is invalid.
The shared resource was not created at this time.
In the firewall settings, file sharing is ticked but greyed out.
The problem started after I had to reinstall Windows XP (Don't ask!). Until
then I was sharing things without problems.
Set up is, PC plus laptop connected through a router. Laptop connects either
via cable or wireless. The laptop sees the PC and oddly can share the
printers.
