Unable to see some shared files/folders on 1 machine.

Hello all, I'm going to go over my network right quick and then I
describe the problem as best I can.

I have 3 PCs on a small home network connected with a router. All are
on the same workgroup and all have folders shared.
Main PC: Windows XP Pro SP2, computer name is 'Halk'
2nd PC: Windows XP Media Center 2005 SP2, computer name is
'mediacenter'
Laptop: Windows XP Tablet Edition 2005 SP2, computer name is 'tablet'

A little background: I can see all main folders that are shared on all
PCs. I can see all files on 'mediacenter' and 'tablet' from any other
pc fine.

Now the problem: While both the 'mediacenter' and 'tablet' can see all
shared folders, they can't see all the files or subfolders inside of
it. This has also occured while my PC was at a LAN party with some of
my friends. I figure it has to be something on the "Halk' PC but I
can't figure it out. I have removed and reinstalled File and Printer
Sharing. I have removed a share and put it back. I have tried it with
Simple File Sharing and the advanced way. I have scoured the internet
to find anything but all I come up with are how to fix not seeing the
shares themself and that is not my problem.

I appreciate any and all the help anyone can provide.

See if this scenario is relevant.

Chuck,

Thank you for the great links. I kinda scanned them over quickly here
at work and there are a few things I'm going to try for sure.
Specifically the CACLS to set all the permissions the same. I'll let
you know how it turns out.

Ok, I have tried everything that I think would be relevent from your
site and many others, but still no go. I did find out something
interesting. I have a folder w/ a subfolder filled w/ files. the maine
folder is shared. From both other PCs I can see the main folder but not
the subfolder. However, if i type in the sub folder at the end in the
address bar it lets me access it and see all the files. I am soooo
confused at this point. anyone have any ideas?

This almost has to be a permissions issue. Did CACLS show identical settings?

Do you have any other folder - subfolder pairs, but with no problem? Run CACLS
there, and compare.

Ok, now I'm really confused. I figured CALCLS would fix the problem. No
such luck. I disabled and re-enable the Server service - no help. I
went looked over all your sugestions and I still cant figure it out. I
did discover something intersting though.

For example, here is the structure of one of my shared folders:

-Main (shared)
|
-- Folder 1
|
-- Folder 2
|
-- Folder 3
-- (about 20 files)

Ok, from both 'Tablet' and 'mediacenter' I can see 'Main' and 'Folder
1' while browsing the share. 'Folder 2' does not show. It looks like
'Folder 1' is just and empty folder. Now here is the odd part. If I
manually type in the full path to 'Folder 2' (ex: \\halk\main\Folder
1\Folder 2) it lets me into it. Once I'm in there I can see 'Folder 3'
and all the files. I can open everything in there fine. That is just
one example of many. The big problem is that some folders do have a sub
folder so I can't see the files at all.

So now I'm completly lost. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can
do from here?

What you're looking at are problems with inherited permissions. By default, the
permissions set for Main are inherited by Folder 1. If you change the
permissions for Folder 1 after setting them up for Main, they will stay as
changed, unless you change them again.

What do you get when you run CACLS to just list permissions?

Have you looked at the GUI equivalent of CACLS? Under Security - Advanced,
you'll see the ACL for a given folder. If you select one entry in the ACL, and
hit Edit, you'll get a check list of all possible permissions settings. Two
specific setting that might be relevant, in your case, is "List Folder" and
"Traverse Folder".

If you want the permissions for Folder 1 and its siblings, and descendants,
equal to Main, just go into the ACL - Advanced Security Settings for Main, and
select "Replace permission entries on all child objects...".

Sorry for the double post. I was using google groups and it must be
having a major delay right now so I switched to Thunderbird. I ran CACLS
to set "Everyone" to have full access for all folders and subfolders. I
also checked that all the folders had the same permissions set and they
did. I didn't double check under edit though. I'll do that when I get
home. I have unshared and re-shared several times as well. This is soo
odd to me. I understand now permissions work but can't figure this one
out at all. I'll let you know what I find.

Quick question, I should be concerned with the "Everyone" user correct?
That is all I've been focusing on since sharing is set to use
"Everyone". Just in case I'm missing something.

Are you using Guest, or non-Guest, authentication? If you're using Guest,
you'll probably be looking at Everyone, since Guest is a member of Everyone.

I'm using Guest authentication. I have gone through and made sure the
permissions on Main are as they should be. Everyone has Read / Execute
permissions. I then we to each sub folder and made sure they were set to
inherit the permissions and removed any custom permissions. Still no go.
Exactly the same. I can see Main and Folder 1 but not Folder 2. I have
used CACLS to view the permissions for each folder and pasted them below.

Main:

BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)F
HALK\Daniel:F
CREATOR OWNER:(OI)(CI)(IO)F
Everyone:(OI)(CI)R
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)F
BUILTIN\Users:(OI)(CI)R
BUILTIN\Users:(CI)(special access:)
SYNCHRONIZE
FILE_APPEND_DATA

BUILTIN\Users:(CI)(special access:)
SYNCHRONIZE
FILE_WRITE_DATA

----------------------------------

Folder 1:

BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)F
HALK\Daniel:F
CREATOR OWNER:(OI)(CI)(IO)F
Everyone:(OI)(CI)R
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)F
BUILTIN\Users:(OI)(CI)R
BUILTIN\Users:(CI)(special access:)
SYNCHRONIZE
FILE_APPEND_DATA

BUILTIN\Users:(CI)(special access:)
SYNCHRONIZE
FILE_WRITE_DATA

---------------------------------

Folder 2:

BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)F
HALK\Daniel:F
CREATOR OWNER:(OI)(CI)(IO)F
Everyone:(OI)(CI)R
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)F
BUILTIN\Users:(OI)(CI)R
BUILTIN\Users:(CI)(special access:)
SYNCHRONIZE
FILE_APPEND_DATA

BUILTIN\Users:(CI)(special access:)
SYNCHRONIZE
FILE_WRITE_DATA
