Help,
I have a Dell Dimension 8100, running XP, and my old monitor fried yesterday, purchased a new LCD today but when I attempt to boot up, I get to the point where I attempt to sign on as administrator, then the screen will go black and a floating box appears stating, "not optimum mode, recommended mode: 1280 X 1024 60Hz. The old monitor was working fine, and I know I had the resolution set above this setting, but now I'm stuck

You stated "my old monitor fried yesterday" and then contradicted
your statement by saying "the old monitor was working fine".
It may be your video card was "fried" and not your monitor.
Go out and purchase a good video card and install it.

Ignoring the obvious contradiction, LCDs do not function in the same way as
CRTs and have a much narrower range of frequencies and refreshes. Suggest
you boot to safe mode and set it according to the manual.
