The search for files and folders facilty is not working, I cannot find the
assistant, and there is no way to change any of the settings, all I see is a
windows explorer bar. Anybody have any suggestions, I have tried everything i
the help and support files to no avail. I do not see 'all files and folders',
I am advised to to the following:
Click Change preferences.
Click Change files and folders search behavior.
Click Standard, and then click OK.
Click All files and folders.

None of these options appear accessible.

In response to your advice - I have a pre-installed version of windows xp,
and have since upgaded to xp service pack 2. I cannot re-install the file as
I have no disk. I do have a recovery disk but I am not willing to reinstall
my whole computer from scratch. I will therefore do without the 'search for
files and folders' facility (unless there is a patch download from
microsoft). Strange thing is, that all the files you specify that are needed,
are actually there where they are supposed to be. Nothing is missing. Maybe
they are corrupt. But thanks for your advice. I will continue to search for
files and folders manually.

Jashley,

Here's an alternative. Some people claim that Agent Ransack is way better
than XP's Search.

[[Agent Ransack is a free tool for finding files and information on your
hard drive fast and efficiently. When searching the contents of files Agent
Ransack displays the text found so you can quickly browse the results
without having to separately open each file!]]

I have just installed SP2 for the second time, and I too have lost my search
tool. After I uninstall SP2 everything is back to normal. Neither Microsoft
nor Dell (My manufacturer) has any solution. I'll do without SP2 for awhile.
In addition after SP2 was installed I can't access my DVD+/RW at all.
