Unable to save forms or reports in an Access 2000 database

When trying to save a form or report in an MS Access 2000 database I get the
error: "The MS Jet Engine could not find the object ". Make sure the object
exists and that you spelled its name and path correctly." The object name is
not listed and the only options are Ok and "Help". After clicking Ok, I get
a second error: "You tried to commit a rollback transaction without first
beginning a transaction." After clicking Ok, the form appears to have been
saved but does not exist after closing and reopening Access. Nothing happens
when I try to save a report. The design window remains open and the report
is not saved. I can, however, update and add data to tables and successfully
create new tables and queries.

I am using default form and report names such as form1 and report1, and
have tried creating forms and reports both with and without attaching data.
The database is secured and the account used to logon has open/run, open
exclusive, and administer rights to the database and open/run, read design,
modify design, and administer rights to all objects including new forms and
reports. The database currently contains 5 small tables, 1 simple select
query, no forms or reports, and no code or macros. The error is reproducible
from multiple workstations. Has anyone else encountered this? Thanks.
