Close everything you possibly can on the machine (including your News
Reader!). If autosave is set, you may have a recent recoverable version
already on your disk.

Desperate measures - can you use Word's facility to send a copy to an email
recipient? Can you save as RTF or text? Can you run any non-office
programs (ie is there any memory left on the system or is it just a
component of Office that is in trouble?) If you can start an unrelated
program, try a screenshot of the current page (well, I did say desperate).
Use ALT + PrtScr keys to copy a bitmap to the clipboard, and then paste into
Paint or similar.

Finally, take any save option that Word offers and write it down to
experience. After reboot, Word may offer to recover the file. When you
can, make sure Word is set to AutoSave every couple of minutes or so
(Tools/Options/Save - "Save AutoRecover every x mins).

Good luck!
