Unable to reinstall Win XP Home

John

My sons computer stopped booting, error message said
there was a corrupt or missing file. Have had problem
with spyware on this PC. Decided to do clean install. Get
error message " setupdd.sys could not be loaded. Error
code 4 " when booting from WinXP CD. Tried reformatting
and repartitioning hard drive with Partition Magic 7 with
no change. Tried installing to second hard drive in PC
same results. Is this a memory or CPU issue?

These days most of us are recommending HijackThis to identify and assist in
the removal of these bad guys. **Post your files to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/, not here.**

NB: If you have ever downloaded HijackThis or CWShredder, it is urgent that
you upgrade to the latest versions before using them again. Due to a new
variant of the CWS Trojan, using either HijackThis or CWShredder on an
infected Win98 or WinME computer may lead to severe damage to that computer.
You must update to the very newest versions of these programs before using
either of them again, and you should get a new copy of CWShredder before
each and every use.

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

Thanks for the knowledge base reference. It turned out
that one of my memory chips must have bit the dust. The
clean install is in progress. Only wish I had backed up
the data files on my sons PC. Live and learn.

Problem was caused by a bad memory chip. I plan to check
out HijackThis and run AV software more frequently.
